DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z October 13, 2021

SMOKE:
California and the Baja...
A large fire over coastal southwestern California was producing an area of
smoke that was extending southeast offshore coastal southern California
and into the northern Baja.  Within this area of smoke, moderate to
high density smoke plume was extending from coastal southwest California
southeast to offshore coastal southern California.

DUST:
Atlantic...
A large area of Saharan dust was covering much of the central and
eastern Tropical Atlantic Ocean.  The dust extended west to near the
eastern Caribbean Islands and then further northwest to portions of the
southwest Atlantic Ocean.

Northern Mexico, New Mexico and Southern Plains….
Areas of blowing dust were seen over portions of northern Mexico
extending northeast into eastern New Mexico and also over portions of
western Texas extending north through western Oklahoma and western Kansas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
