DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0135Z October 18, 2021

SMOKE:
Southeastern United States, Atlantic Ocean...
Widespread agricultural fire activity across the Southeastern
Southeastern U.S. was producing numerous light density smoke plumes
moving predominantly south this evening. An area of light density smoke
from fire activity over the southeastern and central United States,
was extending just off the East Coast of the United States over the
Atlantic from Virginia to the southwest off the coast of Florida.

Pacific Ocean, California and northwestern Mexico Coast...
An area of light density smoke from the fires over coastal southwestern
California, was extending offshore from central California to northwestern
Mexico.

Central California, Nevada...
The Sequoia National Park Wildfires in central California were emitting
light to moderate density smoke which was spreading to the northwest
over western Nevada.


DUST:
Central and Eastern Atlantic Ocean and the southeast Caribbean Sea...
An area of Saharan dust was extending across the eastern and central
Atlantic Ocean and through the southeastern Caribbean Islands and into
the southeastern Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
