DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1610Z October 18, 2021

SMOKE:
Southeastern United States/Northwestern Gulf of Mexico...
Agricultural fire activity was observed over parts of the Southeastern
U.S. including Alabama, Georgia, and Florida where light density smoke
was observed from the fire activity. A region of light density smoke was
observed off the coast of Southeastern Texas over the Northwestern Gulf
of Mexico this morning.

Northwestern U.S./Southwestern Canada...
Light density remnant smoke likely attributed to recent fire activity
in Washington and Oregon was observed over parts of Northern Washington,
Southeastern British Columbia, and Southern Alberta this morning.

California...
Cloud cover from a weather system in the region made smoke analysis
difficult over both Northeastern and Southern California this morning.

DUST:
Southern California...
A small region of blowing dust was observed in Southern California with
dust progressing eastward this morning.

Central and Eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Southeastern Caribbean Sea...
A large region of moderate density Saharan dust was observed across
the Eastern and Central Tropical Atlantic. Light density Saharan dust
was observed over the Southeastern Caribbean Sea including the Lesser
Antilles this morning.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
