DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0310Z October 20, 2021

SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S./Lower Mississippi Valley/Gulf of Mexico...
Agricultural fire activity was observed over parts of the Southeastern
U.S. and Lower Mississippi Valley.  Light density remnant smoke from
the agricultural burning activity was observed over parts of Alabama
and Mississippi.  Light density smoke was also observed over parts of
southeastern Texas, southern Louisiana, and over the northern Gulf of
Mexico.

Southern Rockies/Plains...
Several narrow, light density plumes from both wildfires and
agricultural burns were detected across Arizona, New Mexico, the Texas
Panhandle, and southeastern Oklahoma.

Pacific Northwest/British Columbia...
A number of small, light density plumes from wildfires were observed
over northern Idaho, eastern Washington, and southern British Columbia.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
