DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z November 2, 2021
SMOKE: Gulf Coast/Southern Plains... Light to moderate density smoke plumes were seen emanating from agricultural burning activity across much of the southern CONUS from Texas to Florida. The smoke plumes from this activity were moving south across Mississippi and Alabama, southwest and west across Louisiana, and northwest across Texas, Arkansas, and southeastern Oklahoma. One or two fires across the rest of Oklahoma were seen with attendant smoke plumes moving south-southwest behind a frontal passage. Cloudiness across southern Georgia and the Florida Panhandle was hampering the ability to analyze smoke there. Western Canada/Pacific Northwest... Widespread prescribed burning activity was prevalent across western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. The highest density of analyzed fire activity was across northwestern Alberta and northern Idaho. Much of the smoke was moving west-northwestward outside of central British Columbia, where smoke was moving west-southwestward. A weather system was observed moving across much of Washington State, Oregon, and central and southern Idaho, which was making the analysis of smoke and fire activity near impossible there, even though fires and smoke are likely present given the activity in nearby locations and the recent activity in the obscured areas in previous days. Hosley THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
