DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1810Z November 17, 2021

SMOKE:
Mid-Atlantic/Southeastern U.S. ...
Seasonal agricultural burning activity was observed over parts of the
Southeastern U.S. and a large region of remnant light density smoke
attributed from the agricultural burning activity was observed this
morning. Cloud cover was observed over parts of the Ohio River and
Mississippi Valley from a weather system progressing towards the region
making smoke analysis to the northwest of the region difficult. Light
density smoke was observed over parts of Northern Georgia/South Carolina,
over most of North Carolina, and over Southern Virginia this morning.

Southern Mexico/Bay of Campeche...
A region of light to moderate density smoke was observed over parts of
Veracruz, Tabasco, Eastern Oaxaca, the Gulf of Tehuantepec, and most
of the Southern/Western Bay of Campeche from seasonal fire activity
this morning.

South Florida...
A fire complex was observed in Everglades National Park, however
smoke analysis was difficult in this region due to cloud cover over
the area from a weather system south of the region near Cuba and over
the Northwestern Caribbean Sea. Agricultural burning activity was also
observed in the vicinity of Lake Okeechobee this morning.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
