DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0140Z November 19, 2021

SMOKE:
New England Coast...
A patch of light-density smoke originating from previous days agricultural
burning and prescribed fires in the southeastern U.S. could be seen
traveling toward the northeast off the New England coast.

Arizona...
Numerous Wildfires were observed in eastern Arizona and they were
responsible for several plumbs of light to moderate density smoke that
was moving generally north in direction before becoming cloud covered.

Arkansas...
A Wildfire in western Arkansas was emitting a large plumb of light to
moderated density smoke which was moving generally south in direction
ending near the Oklahoma Texas border as evening approached.

British Columbia, Alberta...
Numerous wildfires in central/northern British Columbia and northern
Alberta were responsible for an area of light density smoke over
central/northern British Columbia into northern Alberta. This smoke was
seen through breaks in the clouds preventing further analysis.

Gulf of Mexico/Mexico/Pacific south of Mexico...
A large area of light density smoke covered parts of eastern and
southern Mexico, a portion of the Pacific south of Mexico, and the
southwestern/western Gulf of Mexico along the coast. This area of smoke
was due mainly to seasonal fires in Mexico and Central America mixing
with remnant smoke.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
