DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z November 26, 2021

SMOKE:
Southern Florida…
A number of mainly thin to locally moderately dense smoke plumes were
visible this morning with agricultural fires near and south of Lake
Okeechobee in southern Florida with the smoke generally moving off to
the southeast.

DUST:
Southern California/Baja/Pacific off of Southern California and Baja…
A relatively small amount of thin density blowing dust was seen along
and off the coast of southern California and northern Baja moving to
the west and southwest and offshore over the nearby Pacific.

UNKNOWN AEROSOL/DUST:
Western Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Southeastern
Mexico/Florida/Bahamas/Cuba/Caribbean...
A large area of mainly thin with more localized patches of embedded
moderate density aerosol was seen this morning over the Pacific south of
Mexico, a portion of southeastern Mexico, the Bay of Campeche, a sizable
portion of the Gulf of Mexico, the Florida peninsula, and the far northern
Bahamas. This aerosol may be composed of at least a little leftover
smoke from seasonal fire activity occurring primarily in southeastern
Mexico and oil/gas flaring in the region, but also from blowing dust
from sources in Mexico and other atmospheric pollutants. In addition,
more aerosol and smoke possibly from oil/gas flaring was visible moving
to the south and southwest across Cuba and out over the Caribbean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
