DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z December 9, 2021

SMOKE:
No significant areas of smoke were visible in satellite imagery this
morning.

AEROSOL:
Central U.S…
Thin density aerosol was seen this morning in between cloudy areas
stretching from northeastern Oklahoma across eastern Kansas and Missouri
to Iowa. It is possible that some remnant smoke from the numerous seasonal
type fires that were detected yesterday in this region may be present.

Eastern Gulf of Mexico/Florida Peninsula/Northern Bahamas…
A swath of thin density aerosol was visible this morning over the eastern
Gulf of Mexico, the Florida peninsula, and off the east coast of Florida
over the nearby Atlantic including the northern Bahamas. Some leftover
smoke from seasonal fire activity yesterday across the Florida peninsula
and the Southeastern U.S. may be part of this aerosol.

Caribbean/Bay of Campeche/Western Gulf of Mexico/Eastern Mexico/Southern
Mexico/Pacific South of Mexico and Northwestern Central America…
Patches of generally thin density aerosol were seen over the Caribbean,
the western Bay of Campeche and western Gulf of Mexico, eastern Mexico,
southern Mexico, and the Pacific off the coast of southern Mexico and
northwestern Central America. Some remnant smoke from seasonal fires in
this region may be a relatively small portion of this aerosol which is
likely composed more of other atmospheric pollutants.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
