DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1732Z December 12, 2021

SMOKE:
South Florida...
Agricultural burning activity was observed around the Lake Okeechobee
region of South Florida. A light to moderate density smoke plumb was
observed progressing to the south from the northeast Lake Okeechobee
region and a light density smoke plumb was observed progressing to the
west from the southern Lake Okeechobee region this morning.

Western/Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean South and west of Mexico, Gulf
of Mexico...
Two areas of light density residual smoke were observed this morning. One
was along the coastal western Mexican states of the Colima and Jalisco
continuing west over to the Pacific Ocean. The second was located on
the southern Mexico coast continuing over the Pacific south of Mexico.

AEROSOL:
Bay of Campeche/Eastern/Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean South of Mexico,Gulf
of Mexico...
Atmospheric pollution likely associated with scattered seasonal burning,
gas flaring as well as other industrial and urban activities that have
persisted in this general area were causing areas of aerosol through
breaks in cloud cover over parts of the Bay of Campeche, western Gulf
of Mexico, eastern and southern Mexico extending to the Pacific south
of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
