DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z December 22, 2021

SMOKE:
Eastern Texas/South Central Oklahoma…
A narrow swath of remnant thin density smoke likely attributed to
yesterday’s round of seasonal fire activity in the South Central
U.S. was visible this morning stretching from southern Oklahoma to the
southeast over eastern Texas.

Southern Florida…
Numerous agricultural fires primarily to the west, south, and east of
Lake Okeechobee in southern Florida were emitting mainly thin density
smoke plumes which moved quickly off to the southeast during the morning.

AEROSOL:
Southern Mexico/Northwestern Central America/Pacific South of
Mexico/Western Bay of Campeche/Western Gulf of Mexico/Eastern Mexico…
The usual aerosol attributed primarily to other atmospheric pollutants
including factory emissions and emissions from gas/oil flaring was seen
again this morning across eastern Mexico, the western part of the Bay of
Campeche, and the western Gulf of Mexico, along with portions of southern
Mexico, northwestern Central America, and the tropical eastern Pacific
south of Mexico and northwestern Central America. Some leftover smoke
from seasonal fire activity in parts of Mexico and northwestern Central
America may also be contributing to this aerosol.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
