DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z January 6, 2022
SMOKE: Eastern Texas/Lower Mississippi Valley and Southeastern U.S... Widespread agricultural burning activity from eastern Texas was observed producing mainly thin density smoke moving toward the northeast. A large region of remnant light density smoke was also observed over Northern Louisiana, Southern Arkansas, Northern Mississippi, Central/Northern Alabama, and Northwestern Georgia. Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Gulf of Mexico... Scattered fire activity across southern and central Mexico was observed emitting mainly thin density smoke covering portions of central and southern Mexico, the Bay of Campeche, and the western Gulf of Mexico. Hispaniola... Several wildfires in Southeastern Haiti and in Western/Southwestern parts of the Dominican Republic were observed emitting light to moderate density smoke plumes. The smoke was observed moving westward and then gradually thinning out in density further from the fires in this morning’s GOES visible satellite imagery. SMOKE/AEROSOL: Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Eastern and Southern Mexico/Eastern Pacific Ocean... The typical mix of smoke and aerosols from seasonal burning, oil and gas flaring, and other industrial sources was observed over portions of Eastern Mexico and the Western Bay of Campeche, Southern Mexico, and off the coast of Southern Mexico well out over the tropical Eastern Pacific ocean. Significant cloud cover over the remainder of the Bay of Campeche and the Gulf of Mexico limited additional detection of smoke/aerosol over this region this morning. YL THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
