DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z January 21, 2022
SMOKE… Florida… Agricultural and seasonal burning across Florida was observed today. Smoke emanating from these fires was moving off toward the east-northeast. Clouds across south Florida may have obscured smoke emanating from the agricultural areas near Lake Okeechobee. Southern California/NW Mexico… Agricultural burning from the Salton Sea to the Colorado River Delta was observed emitting light smoke moving south. Northern California Valley… Fires north of Sacramento in California’s central valley were observed emitting mainly light smoke that was observed moving north to north-northeast. One fire did produce a small moderate density smoke plume. Plains states… Scattered burning activity from Iowa and Nebraska south into northeastern Texas was noted in satellite imagery. A handful were observed producing light smoke, which was moving off mainly south-southeastward. Elsewhere… Cloud cover was present from across central and southern Texas across the ArkLaMiss and into Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas. It is likely that at least some smoke was present across these areas. From earlier: SMOKE/AEROSOL... Western Gulf of Mexico/Southern and Eastern Mexico/Northwestern Central America/Pacific Ocean South of Mexico and Central America… A combination of thin density smoke from seasonal fires in Mexico and Central America and other unknown aerosol was extending along the western Gulf of Mexico and eastern Mexico. This continued over southwestern Mexico and northwestern Central America extending offshore into the Tropical Eastern Pacific. Hosley THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
