DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0114Z January 31, 2022

SMOKE:
South Central and Southeastern U.S…
Agricultural burning activity was observed throughout the South-central
U.S. and the southeastern U.S., fires throughout the area were emitting
light to moderate density smoke plumes with occasional heavier smoke
at the sources. Smoke plumbs from Louisiana east were generally moving
towards the east, fires west of Louisiana were generally moving northeast
in direction as evening approached.

South Florida...
Agricultural burning activity was observed around the Lake Okeechobee
region of South Florida. Light to heavy density plumbs of smoke were
observed progressing to the southwest.

California...
Seasonal burning activity in northern California was emitting light
density smoke which was last seen moving northwest in direction.

SMOKE/AEROSOL:
Bay of Campeche/Southern Mexico/Northwestern Central America/Pacific
Ocean South of Mexico and Central America/Cuba/Caribbean…
A combination of mainly thin density aerosols from oil and gas flaring and
other industrial pollution sources along with leftover smoke from regional
seasonal fire activity was visible today across a portion of southern
Mexico and northwestern Central America and extending well off the coast
of southern Mexico and Central America over the eastern Pacific Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
