DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1710Z February 1, 2022
SMOKE: South Central and Southeastern United States... Widespread agricultural burning activity was observed throughout the South-central and southeastern United States. Cloud cover over the south-central U.S from a weather system over the region has made smoke analysis difficult this morning. Remnant light to moderate density smoke attributed from recent widespread agricultural burning activity was observed over southern Kentucky, most of Tennessee, northeastern Mississippi, most of Alabama, southern/central Georgia, southern portions of South Carolina, over parts of northern Florida, and offshore to the east and over the western Atlantic. South Florida... Agricultural burning activity was observed around the Lake Okeechobee region of South Florida. Light density smoke plumes were observed over the region this morning. SMOKE/AEROSOL: Bay of Campeche/Gulf of Mexico/Southern and Eastern Mexico/Northwestern Central America/Pacific Ocean South of Mexico and Central America... A broad region of light density smoke from seasonal fire activity in Mexico and Central America along with other atmospheric pollutants including aerosols from oil, gas flaring, and other industries was observed this morning. The smoke and aerosols were observed over most of the western Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche, also the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, as well as southern/eastern Mexico, northwestern Central America including Guatemala, and offshore to the south/southwest from southern Mexico and Central America over the eastern Pacific. Sambucci THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
