DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z February 7, 2022
SMOKE… Western Cuba/Caribbean… A few patches of likely remnant thin density smoke from yesterday’s round of seasonal fire activity in Cuba was seen this morning along a portion of western Cuba and over the Caribbean to the west and southwest of Cuba. SMOKE/AEROSOL... Southern Mexico/Northwestern Central America/Pacific Ocean South of Mexico and Central America… A large mass of mostly thin density aerosol which is likely composed partly of smoke from seasonal fires in Mexico and Central America and aerosols from oil and gas flaring and other industrial sources in Mexico and Central America was visible this morning over portions of southern Mexico, Central America, and extending well off the coast of southern Mexico and Central America over the Pacific Ocean. Within this mass of mostly thin density aerosol was a swath of moderately dense aerosol extending from the border of the Mexican state of Chiapas and Guatemala to the south over the Pacific. DUST: Baja/Eastern Pacific… A leftover area of thin density blowing dust was seen moving to the west and off the coast of far northwestern Baja over the nearby Pacific Ocean. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
