DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z February 21, 2022

SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S/Northern Gulf of Mexico...
A large region of remnant light density smoke from recent widespread
seasonal fire activity over the Southeastern U.S. was observed over
the region and as well as over most of the Northern Gulf of Mexico and
Northern Gulf coast. Light density smoke was observed over parts of
Georgia, Alabama, and Northern Florida as well as over parts of the
Carolinas. Smoke analysis however was difficult this morning due to
cloud cover from a weather system over the southern Mississippi Valley.

Southern Hispaniola/Caribbean...
A fire complex that was observed in the Southwestern Dominican Republic
emitting light to moderate density smoke was seen progressing towards
the southwest and out over the Caribbean Sea this morning.

SMOKE/AEROSOL:
Western Gulf of Mexico/Pacific Ocean South of Mexico and Central
America...
The latest GOES visible satellite imagery observed several broad regions
of light density smoke mixed in with other atmospheric pollutants
including aerosols from oil and gas flaring and other industries over
a large portion of Mexico, Central America, most of the Western Gulf
of Mexico, and the Bay of Campeche. Smoke was also observed over most
of coastal southern Mexico and Central America extending southwestward
out over the Pacific Ocean this morning.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
