DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1651Z March 23, 2022

SMOKE:
Atlantic Ocean off the eastern United States...
A large area of light density remnant smoke from recent heavy seasonal
burning activity was seen extending southeast from the northeastern
United States approximately 1,600 miles off the North Carolina Coast
over the Atlantic.

Lake Okeechobee, Florida...
There were several fires south of Lake Okeechobee that were emitting light
density smoke plumes towards the north before becoming cloud covered.

Heavy cloud cover over the central and eastern parts of the United States
(Current seasonal burning hotspots) precluded further smoke analysis
this morning.

SMOKE/AEROSOL:
Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Southern and Eastern Mexico/Central
America/Pacific Ocean Well South of Mexico and Central America…
A mass of thin to moderate density smoke mixed with aerosols from oil
and gas flaring and other industrial sources in Mexico was visible today
over most of the Gulf of Mexico, Bay of Campeche, southern and eastern
Mexico, Central America, and extending well to the south over the Pacific
Ocean off the southern coast of Mexico and Central America. Moderately
dense smoke/aerosol mixture was seen especially along and off the coast
of southeastern Mexico and Guatemala over the Pacific and over the Bay
of Campeche. The smoke over this large area was due to the widespread
seasonal burning in Mexico and Central America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
