DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z April 10, 2022

SMOKE:
Central United States….
A large number of fires was seen over the Central Plains and was allowing
for at least light density smoke to extend from there into the Northern
Plains. Within that area, an area of moderate density smoke was seen
extending from eastern Kansas north into portions of Iowa and Nebraska.

SMOKE/AEROSOL:
Florida/Southern Plains/Gulf of Mexico/Mexico/Central America/Pacific
off the Southern Coast of Mexico and Central America….
A large area of what is believed to be mainly thin to moderate density
smoke was visible over Florida extending west and northwest through
the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, western Gulf of Mexico, United States
Southern Plains, much of Mexico, parts of Central America and into the
Tropical Pacific Ocean south of Mexico and Central America. Moderate
density smoke was seen more over eastern Mexico and the western Gulf of
Mexico into southern Texas and also over coastal areas of southwestern
Texas and extending offshore into the Tropical Pacific Ocean. The source
of the smoke was the widespread ongoing seasonal fire activity in Mexico
and Central America though some contribution from seasonal fires and a
few wildfires occurring in the central and south central U.S may also
be responsible for across the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, and off the
southeastern U.S. coast. Also, some of the aerosol farther to the south
around Mexico, Central America and the Gulf of Mexico may be attributed
in part to oil and gas flaring and other industrial sources in Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
