DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z April 10, 2022

SMOKE/AEROSOL:
Southern Plains/Midwest/Southeastern U.S/Gulf of
Mexico/Bahamas/Cuba/Mexico/Central America/Pacific off the Southern
Coast of Mexico and Central America….
A large area of what is believed to be mainly thin to moderate density
smoke was visible over central eastern Tennessee and northwest Georgia
extending west and northwest through the southeastern Gulf of Mexico,
through the Bahamas into the Atlantic, western and central Cuba, western
Gulf of Mexico, United States Southern Plains, parts of the Midwest, much
of Mexico, parts of Central America and into the Pacific Ocean south of
Mexico and Central America. Moderate density smoke was seen observed over
eastern Mexico and the western Gulf of Mexico and extending into southern
tip of Texas. More moderate density smoke was observed over southern
Mexico and extending south into the Pacific. In the addition, cloud
cover made the the full extent of the smoke/aerosol mix in the United
States Southern Plains difficult to analyze this morning. The source of
the smoke was through the widespread ongoing seasonal fire activity in
Mexico and Central America though some contribution from seasonal fires
and a few wildfires occurring in the central and south central U.S may
also be responsible. In addition, some of the aerosol farther to the south
around Mexico, Central America and the Gulf of Mexico may be attributed
in part to oil and gas flaring and other industrial sources in Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
