DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z April 15, 2022

SMOKE/AEROSOL:
Central U.S/Northeastern U.S/Western Atlantic/Eastern and Southern
Mexico/Central America/Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Pacific Ocean
South of Mexico and Central America...
The combination of light density smoke from seasonal fires in Mexico
and Central America along with aerosols from oil and gas flaring and
other industrial sources in the region was observed this morning covering
southern and eastern Mexico, most of Central America, the Bay of Campeche,
the Gulf of Mexico, the western Atlantic along the eastern U.S, and
the Pacific Ocean extending well south of the southern coast of Mexico
and Central America. The smoke/aerosol mix was also observed extending
well into the U.S, going as far north to at least Nebraska and Iowa in
the Central U.S, and moving east/northeastward towards Maine. Moderate
density smoke/aerosol covered the western and central Gulf of Mexico, the
Bay of Campeche and portions of southern and eastern Mexico. Widespread
seasonal burning in the Central U.S may be contributing factors to to
smoke/aerosol mix, especially the smoke observed within the U.S.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
