DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z April 28, 2022

SMOKE:
Northern Plains/Midwest/Ohio River Region...
A large area of thin density smoke was detected across the northern
Plains through the much of the Midwest and extending eastward into the
majority of the Ohio River Region. Much of this smoke was sourced from
widespread agricultural burning yesterday in the region. Cloud cover
from the west covered much of Central and Midwest U.S, thus making the
full extent of the smoke is unknown in this evening’s analysis.

Southeastern U.S…
Fire activity producing light smoke plumes was visible across the
southeastern U.S, from Louisiana to North Carolina. Majority of the
smoke was observed moving southward with the exception of the smoke in
Louisiana and Arkansas. Smoke in Louisiana was observed moving westward
while the smoke in Arkansas was seen moving northward.

Southwestern U.S...
A large wildfire located in Central Arizona was observed producing a
thin density smoke plume extending across northwestern Arizona and into
parts of southern Utah and Colorado.

SMOKE/AEROSOL:
Southern Mexico/Pacific Ocean south of Mexico..
An area of thin density smoke from seasonal fires in Mexico along with
other atmospheric pollutants including aerosols from oil and gas flaring
and other industries in the region was observed this evening over southern
Mexico and Pacific ocean well south of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
