DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z May 10, 2022

SMOKE:
New Mexico/Central and Eastern United States...
The major wildfires burning in northern New Mexico were observed producing
dense smoke extending northeastward to near the Texas/Oklahoma/Colorado
borders. Moderate smoke extended into Kansas. Light smoke and remnant
smoke extended as far as Ontario, including much of the Great Lakes
region, with additional light to moderate density remnant smoke observed
moving generally southward from the eastern Great Lakes as far as
northern Florida.

Canadian Maritime Provinces…
A fire in western Nova Scotia was producing a plume of smoke extending
westward to near the southern Maine coastline. An additional fire in
southwestern New Brunswick was producing a plume of smoke extending
westward into east-central Maine.

North Carolina…
A few fires presumed to be agricultural in nature were observed in
eastern North Carolina producing plumes of light smoke moving southward.

Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Pacific Ocean...
A large area of smoke and aerosols presumably related to seasonal burning
and industrial activity was observed covering much of Mexico, as well
as adjacent coastal regions of the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico,
including the whole of the Bay of Campeche.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
