DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1750Z May 26, 2022

SMOKE:
New Mexico/Texas/Mexico...
Ongoing wildfires over the southwestern part of New Mexico were
emitting light to moderate density plumes that were moving to the
southeast covering southern New Mexico, far northern Mexico, and most
of southwest and south Texas.


SMOKE/AEROSOL:
Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Pacific...
A large mass of light density smoke from heavy seasonal fire activity
mixed with aerosols from oil/gas flaring and other industrial sources
in Mexico was observed covering most of central and southern Mexico,
the western Gulf of Mexico, the Bay of Campeche, and extending well
offshore south of Mexico into the Pacific.  Moderate density smoke
was observed along the south-central coast of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
