DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0120Z May 30, 2022

SMOKE:
Central and Southeastern U.S./Northern Gulf of Mexico…
Wildfires continue to burn in north-central and southwestern New
Mexico, in particular the Black fire which could be seen releasing
moderate-to-heavy smoke across central New Mexico. Light smoke from
those wildfires was dispersing toward the northeast into western-central
Oklahoma and Kansas, and Texas. Remnant smoke from the New Mexico
wildfires, along with smaller plumes from prescribed fires across the
southeast, combined to form a large plume of light smoke that covered
much of the central U.S. and extended eastward over Georgia and the
Atlantic waters off the coast of the Carolinas and southward over the
northern Gulf of Mexico.

SMOKE/AEROSOL:
Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Pacific Ocean...
A large plume of primarily light to moderate density smoke resulting
from widespread seasonal fire activity and a few wildfires in Mexico
continued to be seen this afternoon covering most of Mexico and extending
offshore to the south and west of Mexico over the Pacific. The smoke
also extended over the western Gulf of Mexico where it mixed with smoke
from the New Mexico wildfires. A few smaller patches of embedded thicker
smoke associated with a few of the more significant fires were seen
mainly over western Mexico. Moderate smoke was also seen originating
from gas flaring activity in the Bay of Campeche.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
