DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1610Z June 25, 2022

SMOKE:
Central and Eastern United States, Northern Mexico and Southeastern
Canada…
A combination of active wildfire and agricultural burning activity,
coupled with remnant smoke from similar activity over the past few days
and weeks, has allowed a large area of light density smoke over much of
the central and eastern United States, southeastern Canada and much of
northern Mexico extending across the Baja and into the eastern Pacific
Ocean. Within this region, an area of moderate density smoke, from a fire
over north central Texas, was seen extending across southern Oklahoma.

Alaska and Canada….
A large area of light to moderate density smoke, attributed mainly to
wildfires burning in portions of Alaska and northwestern Canada was
visible today stretching from southern Alaska to the northeast over
central and eastern Alaska through northwestern and north central Canada
and southeast through British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan and
into the north central United States. Within this area of smoke, there
were several areas of moderate to high density smoke those being over the
southern Northwest Territories, northern Alberta and northern Saskatchewan
and also closer to the ongoing fires over central and southern Alaska.

BLOWING DUST:
Tropical Atlantic…
An area of Saharan Dust was seen approaching the Eastern Islands of the
Caribbean and Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
