DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z June 27, 2022

SMOKE:
Central and Eastern United States, and Southeastern Canada…
A large plume consisting of light density smoke originating primarily
from agricultural fires across the south central U.S., including southern
Great Plains and Mississippi Valley, could be seen stretching from Texas
to New England and Nova Scotia, passing through the southern and eastern
states and extending over the Atlantic ocean off Florida’s coastline
and over most of the Gulf of Mexico.

Alaska, Northwestern and central Canada and the North Central United
States….
A large area of light to moderate density smoke, attributed mainly
to wildfires burning in portions of western and central Alaska and
northwestern Canada, was visible stretching from western Alaska to the
northeast over central and eastern Alaska through northwestern and north
central Canada, including Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, and into
the north central United States. Pockets of heavier density smoke were
seen near some of the larger wildfires in western Alaska, while an area of
moderate density smoke stretched across central-eastern Alaska and western
Yukon, in addition to parts of eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba.

DUST:
Eastern Caribbean Islands….
An area of moderate density Saharan Dust was seen approaching the eastern
Caribbean Islands from the tropical Atlantic.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
