DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z June 28, 2022
SMOKE: Alaska, Yukon, and Northwestern Territories... A large area of light to moderate density smoke, attributed mainly to wildfires burning in portions of western and central Alaska and northwestern Canada, was visible stretching from central Alaska through eastern Alaska and to the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Pockets of moderate to heavy density smoke stretched across western Northwest Territories. Heavier density smoke may be closer to sources of wildfires throughout Alaska and the Northwest Territories but cloud obscures a good chunk of the regions. South-Central U.S, Ohio Valley, Eastern Canada... Remnants of light density smoke most likely due to wildfires throughout Canada and fire activity in the U.S was observed progressing relatively eastward, extending through south-central U.S from parts of northeastern New Mexico through Michigan and Eastern Canada, into parts of southeastern Ontario and western Quebec. In addition, parts of the smoke in the southern U.S mixed with a combination of smoke, dust, and various aerosols observed in Southeastern Texas and along eastern Texas, which further extended through north-central Mexico and into Pacific Ocean south of western Mexico. DUST: Tropical Atlantic: An area of light and hazy Saharan Dust was observed approaching the eastern islands of the Caribbean and Caribbean Sea. TN THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
