DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z July 2, 2022
SMOKE: Alaska, much of Canada, northern tier of CONUS... A n expansive area of varying density smoke was observed this morning extending from Alaska east-southeastward across northern an central Canada. From there, the smoke plume extends south toward southern British Columbia and then continues further east-southeastward into southern Alberta, the Northern Plains, and the Great Lakes. From there, it extends east-northeastward along the St. Lawrence River, across maritime Canada and out into the Atlantic. The main parent activity is located in Alaska, where thick to very thick smoke production is observed. Further moderate to at times thick smoke production can be seen from scattered activity over northern Canada. The exact extent of smoke across Alaska is hampered by the presence of cloud cover. Mexico, Western Gulf of Mexico, Central and Eastern United States... Another area of smoke, possibly mixed with other aerosol from gas flaring, was seen extending from the Yucatan Peninsula northwestward across the western gulf of Mexico and eastern Mexico into the Southern Plains. This area of smoke appears to merge with the area of smoke previously discussed across the Central Plains. The parent activity for this area of smoke is presumably agricultural burning in Mexico with possibly some contributions from remnant smoke entering from the north. DUST: Caribbean Sea... An area of Saharan Dust was seen blanketing much of the eastern North Atlantic extending westward across the eastern and central Caribbean Sea. This could be extending as far west as Central America. Hosley THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
