DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1520Z July 22, 2022

SMOKE:
Much of Canada, United States, Gulf of Mexico, Northern Mexico and the
North Atlantic Ocean…
An expansive area of varying density smoke was analyzed over much of
Canada, the United States, the western Gulf of Mexico, northern Mexico
and extending well into the North Atlantic Ocean. Much of this area
of smoke was due to the active fires across northern Alberta, northern
Saskatchewan, and the southern Northwest Territories. The highest
density smoke was seen over portions of the Northwest Territories and then
extending southeast into northern British Columbia and northern Alberta.
Another area of moderate density smoke was seen over southern portions
of Ontario and Quebec. Further to the south, fire activity over the
western United States were also contributing to much of the smoke seen
over the United States. The highest density smoke seen in this region
was extending from Montana southeast into South Dakota.

BLOWING DUST:
Tropical Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea….
A large area of Saharan Dust was seen extending across the Tropical
Atlantic Ocean through the eastern Caribbean Islands and into the eastern
Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
