DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z August 4, 2022

SMOKE:
Northern and Southern United States, Southern Canada ..
A large area of light to moderate density smoke, from the ongoing
fires over the western United States and southern Canada, was extending
across most of the Northwestern U.S and the Great Plains along with the
southern portion of Canada. The southern portion of the area of smoke
which extended through Texas and into small sections of Mexico, was also
likely a result of a few fires over Texas as well some contributions
to smoke over in the Gulf of Mexico. The smoke may extend further east
however cloud cover extending from eastern Canada through the Ohio Valley
and into Missouri, made the extent difficult to determine. Within the
large area of smoke, localized moderate to high density smoke was seen
closer to the fire activity over the western United States and southern
Canada. There were also several areas of moderate density smoke with
those being over the Southern Plains from northeast Texas to southwest
Missouri and also from Wyoming to the Dakotas.

Alaska...
A wildfire in east central Alaska was observed produce a small area of
moderate to heavy dense smoke moving eastward.

DUST:
Tropical Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and Southern Gulf of Mexico ...
An area of Saharan dust was extending across the Tropical Atlantic,
through the Caribbean Sea and extending into the southern Gulf of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
