DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z August 4, 2022

SMOKE:
CONUS and Southern Canada ..
A large area of light density smoke from the ongoing wildfires in
California and Canada, and seasonal burning across the southern
U.S. covered most of the Conterminous U.S. with the exception of the
Arizona, Nevada, and southern Florida. The plume extended further to
the north over southern Canada and to the east over the northwestern
Atlantic off the coast of New England. Pockets of medium density smoke
could be found stretching across eastern Montana and Wyoming, the Dakotas
and into northeastern Nebraska, and Minnesota, in addition to an area
off the coast of the Carolinas. Heavy density smoke was also observed
around the McKinney and Yet and Alex wildfires near the California-Oregon
border, with their smoke plumes dispersing toward the northeast into
southeastern Oregon.

Alaska/Northwestern Canada...
A plume of light-density smoke was visible from western Alaska to the
Northwest Territories. A pocket of medium-to-heavy smoke originating from
a few active wildfires could be seen near the sources in northeastern
Alaska, extending eastward over northwestern Yukon.

DUST:
Tropical Atlantic, eastern Caribbean ...
An area of light Saharan dust was extending across the Tropical Atlantic,
through the eastern Caribbean region.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
