DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z August 6, 2022
SMOKE: Northwestern and Central CONUS and Southern Canada… Numerous wildfires throughout northern California, western Oregon, and Washington state were observed to be producing plumes of up to dense smoke moving generally northeastward. Remnant smoke presumed to be from these fires extended along the U.S./Canadian border and southward dow the Great Plains. Additional fires in Oklahoma and Texas were also producing plumes of mostly light smoke locally. Alaska/Northwestern Canada… Numerous wildfires were observed across Northwest Territories producing plumes of dense smoke generally moving north and eastward. Remnant smoke from these fires and possibly those in Alaska was observed across much of northwestern Canada extending down into the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Clouds across much of Alaska prevented analysis of smoke in that region during the afternoon. DUST: Tropical Atlantic/eastern Caribbean… A large area of Saharan dust was observed at sunset extending across the Tropical Atlantic from west Africa to northeast of the Windward and Leeward Islands. MTC THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
