DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z August 12, 2022

SMOKE:
United States and Canada….
A large area of thin to locally moderate density smoke was seen extending
from the Pacific Northwest of the United States and western Canada to
the north and east over western and southern Canada. The smoke then
extends south through most of the Central United States to the western
Gulf of Mexico and northeast through the Southeastern United States to
New England. The smoke over the central and northeastern United States is
from a combination of smoke from the wildfires in northwestern Canada as
well as the northwestern part of the United States. The smoke over the
northwestern United States and southwestern Canada is from the wildfires
in the northwestern United States with some contribution from a few
wildfires in southwestern Canada. Within this area of smoke, moderate
density smoke was seen over the Pacific Northwest over western Oregon
and western Washington and also extending from the eastern Northwest
Territories to northern Manitoba.

DUST:
Southeast United States Coastal Areas, Gulf of Mexico, Tropical Atlantic,
Caribbean Sea and Caribbean Islands….
An area of Saharan Dust was seen along the coastal locations and offshore
the Southeastern United States and extending southeast through Florida and
into the Central Gulf of Mexico. Another area of Saharan Dust was seen
extending across the Tropical Atlantic Ocean through the eastern Caribbean
Islands and into the eastern Caribbean Sea and central Caribbean Islands.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
