DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z August 18, 2022

SMOKE:
Much of Canada, Western and Central United States….
Fire activity over the western United States, southwestern Canada and
northern Canada were combining to produce a large area of mostly light
density smoke that was extending across most of the western and north
central United States and also across northern and central Canada.
Within this area localized areas of moderate to high density smoke were
seen near the ongoing fire activity over the area. A larger area of
moderate density smoke was also seen extending from northern Saskatchewan
northeast towards portions of northern Quebec.

Offshore the Southeastern United States to the Northern Gulf of Mexico….
An area of light density smoke, that was from the western United States
fires, was extending from just offshore the Southeastern United States
southwest through Florida to the northern Gulf of Mexico.

DUST:
Tropical and Subtropical Atlantic Ocean and the eastern Caribbean Sea….
An area of Saharan Dust was seen extending across the Tropical and
Subtropical Atlantic Ocean and through the eastern Caribbean Islands
and into the eastern Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED

TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
