DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0103Z August 28, 2022

SMOKE:
Northern California to Central/Eastern U.S....
Wildfires in northwestern California and southwestern Oregon were observed
producing light to moderate smoke which extended out over the coastal
Pacific Ocean nearby. Lighter remnant smoke from these fires, as well
as fires in northern Canada, extended eastward across Idaho, Wyoming,
and Montana before expanding to cover much of the central and eastern
U.S. with the exception of Florida, Louisiana, and southern Mississippi,
Alabama, and Georgia. The smoke continued off the east coast over the
Atlantic Ocean south of New England to south of Newfoundland.

Central California...
Two wildfires in east-central California was seen producing light density
smoke that was moving east into Nevada.

Canada...
Dense smoke was observed over northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba
with moderate smoke extending from the far south-central Northwestern
Territories to the southeast covering parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan,
Manitoba, Ontario and far western Quebec. Thinner smoke extended from
the Yukon and Northwest Territories to central Quebec.

DUST:
An area of Saharan dust was observed over the central Atlantic Ocean
approaching the Leeward Islands earlier today.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
