DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z August 30, 2022
SMOKE: Central and Eastern U.S./Canada... Wildfires in the Yukon and Northwest Territories have contributed to a large area of remnant light density smoke, extending from south-central part of the Northwest Territories through a large part of Saskatchewan and and Manitoba and into the U.S., where the smoke covers most of the Great Plains and the Mid-West. A patch of remnant smoke that extends through parts of the Eastern U.S, from Alabama to New England region, and likely to part of the large area of remnant smoke mention previously, but cloud cover has created a line of division between the two areas of smoke. Northwestern U.S... Wildfires over central/western Oregon, northwestern California, and central Idaho combined to produce a large area of light density smoke that extends through most of the Northwestern U.S and parts of southern British Columbia. In addition, a patch of moderate smoke, contributed from the Rum Creek Fire in Oregon and wildfires in northwestern California, was observed extending along the Pacific Coast while engulfing the regions of northern California to southwestern Oregon. Thick density smoke was observed closer to the sources of the fire, most notably the Rum Creek Fire in Oregon and northwestern California. DUST: Caribbean... A thin plume of Saharan dust was detected just off the outskirts of eastern Caribbean. Konon THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
