DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z August 31, 2022
SMOKE: Central Canada/Eastern U.S.... Remnant smoke from fires in northwestern Canada was observed extending from the Alberta/Northwest Territories border southeastward across the Great Lakes and expanding along the Appalachians and Atlantic and Gulf Coast regions from Texas to Nova Scotia. Northwestern U.S/Southern British Columbia... Numerous wildfires were present throughout the region, particularly northwestern California and western Oregon, northwestern Washington and southwestern British Columbia, and northeastern Oregon and central and northern Idaho. Many of these fires were observed during the afternoon to be producing large amounts of dense smoke, with thinner smoke spread across much of the region from the Pacific coast to central Montana and northwestern Wyoming, including much of southern British Columbia. Central California/Western Nevada… A cluster of wildfires in the area of Yosemite National Park were producing dense smoke moving generally northward, with thinner smoke extending beyond Lake Tahoe and Reno. Kansas… A fire in northeastern Kansas was producing a plume of smoke moving southward to near the Kansas/Oklahoma border. DUST: Caribbean... An area of Saharan dust was observed over the northwestern Caribbean Sea and adjacent areas of the open Atlantic Ocean. MTC THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED.
