DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1628Z September 1, 2022

SMOKE:
North Central and Northwestern U.S./Southern Canada/Pacific off the
Northwest U.S. Coast...
Wildfires were detected over British Columbia, western Montana, northern
and central Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and  California resulting in
a broad area of light to moderate density smoke that was spreading to
the east which covered portions of the western, northwestern and north
central U.S. as well as parts of southern Canada and off the northwestern
Mexico & Californian coast over the far eastern Pacific. A large area
of moderate density smoke was observed covering all or most of Oregon,
Washington, Idaho, Montana, Northern Colorado, southern British Columbia,
southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan. Patches of thicker density
smoke were visible closer to most of the wildfires this morning.

Central California...
Two wildfires in east-central California was seen producing light to
moderate density smoke that was moving northwest this morning.

DUST:
Caribbean...
An area of light Saharan dust was observed over the central Caribbean
Sea south of Cuba before becoming enveloped by cloud cover.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
