DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z September 2, 2022
SMOKE: North Central and Northwestern U.S/Western and Southern Canada/Pacific off the Northwest U.S. Coast... A large area of smoke was observed across southwestern Canada, the western CONUS, and the Pacific Ocean of California. The main contributors to the large area of smoke are primarily from the fire activity residing across the Pacific northwest and western Canada. A number of thick density plumes were observed across northwestern U.S and British Columbia, most notably a massive plume moving northeast into Washington from the wildfire in Central Oregon and a patch residing over northern Idaho and northwestern Montana from the wildfires scattered across their respective regions. Wildfire activity from southern British Columbia into Idaho was producing light to moderate dense smoke that was moving east/southeast into the Midwest and Ontario respectively. Northeastern British Columbia/northern Alberta... Wildfire activity in northeastern British Columbia was observed producing a moderate smoke that was moving east across northern Alberta, while thick smoke was concentrated in British Columbia. Central California... A wildfire in the Sierras was seen producing varying density smoke that was moving west-northwest across the San Joaquin Valley. DUST: Caribbean... An area of light Saharan dust was observed across the Caribbean before running into cloud cover. Nguyen THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
