DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z September 7, 2022

SMOKE:
Central/Eastern-Southern Canada/Northwestern/Western/Central and
Northern/ U.S
A large area of smoke primarily linked to wildfire activity in
southeastern British Columbia, Idaho and western Montana continued
to cover a large area of Canada from eastern British Columbia east
to Quebec/Newfoundland, the western and northern and central US. An
area of moderately dense to dense smoke spreads across a large area
of Ontario/Quebec and south into Minnesota and the northern Great
Lakes region. Another area extends over parts of northwest California
into western Oregon northeast into northern Oregon, most of Idaho,
Montana, Wyoming, the Central Plains south from the Dakotas to the Texas
Panhandle/Oklahoma area and east into Wisconsin and western Illinois
and most of Missouri. Multiple wildfires in southern British Columbia,
northern Idaho and western Montana are producing dense to very dense
smoke from source. The bulk of the smoke is seen dispersing predominantly
toward the east across northern U.S. and southern Canada.

Light Saharan dust could be seen in the southeastern Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
