DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0032Z September 10, 2022

SMOKE:
Western and Eastern Canada/Western, Central, and northeastern
CONUS/Pacific Ocean/Atlantic Ocean/Greenland/Iceland...
An expansive area of smoke extends from the western CONUS out into the
open Pacific Ocean while also extending from the northwestern CONUS into
the Great Plains, western Great Lakes, southern and eastern Canada,
the northeastern CONUS, the Labrador Sea, Greenland, Iceland, and
the northern Atlantic. The thickest smoke was observed throughout the
northwestern U.S. where numerous wildfires were releasing large amounts
of thick smoke that was observed around southern British Columbia, Idaho,
western Montana, Oregon, Washington and northern California. Another
wildfire in Northern British Columbia was producing a large amount of
moderate to dense smoke that was generally moving east into northern
Alberta. Another area of moderate smoke starts in the central U.S. near
Kansas and the Oklahoma panhandle and extends to the northeast stretching
across the states and out over the Atlantic ocean south of Long Island,
New England and Nova Scotia all of which are also covered by moderate
smoke. The bulk of the smoke is seen dispersing predominantly toward the
east across northern U.S. and southern Canada with the exception of some
smoke traveling off the west coast.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
