DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z September 21, 2022
SMOKE: Northwestern United States, Pacific, Western into Central Canada and Territories.. Wildfire activity across the Pacific Northwest (Washington/Idaho mostly) and southwestern British Columbia was observed emitting moderate to dense smoke. Dense smoke is emitting from the source, but residual smoke has been seen across western Oregon, Washington and into the Pacific. In Canada the same area of smoke is covering most of British Columbia, northern/central Alberta, north into the Territories and as far east as northwest Saskatchewan. Some more dense areas have been seen over the Pacific. Smoke may be spread farther south across the Pacific/coastline and farther north into the Territories, but cloud cover is obscuring the full view. Mississippi Valley/Southeast/Mid-Atlantic/Gulf of Mexico… Residual light smoke from agricultural fires burning over the last few days is seen from the northern sections of the Gulf of Mexico into the southern Mississippi Valley/Southeast and into the Mid-Atlantic, Tennessee and Ohio Valley and as far north as central New York. Also, smoke has been seen along the east coast and as far south as northern Florida. Agricultural fires are already picking up today with some fires producing plumes of light to moderately dense smoke. Kibler THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
