DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z September 24, 2022

SMOKE:
Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nunavut...
Residual light density smoke with areas of moderately dense smoke was seen
this late morning/early afternoon from the numerous wildfires burning in
the southern Northwest Territories over the last few days. The smoke
begins in the southern Northwest Territories and extends east into
northwest Saskatchewan, northern Manitoba, southern Nunavut and into
sections of western Hudson Bay. Areas of moderately dense smoke was
observed in southern Northwest Territories and Nunavut and northern
Manitoba.

Southeast/Mississippi Valley/Southern Plains/Northeast Mexico/Gulf
of Mexico...
Light residual smoke was visible covering central/eastern Texas and
Oklahoma, southern Missouri and Illinois, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky,
western Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, western Georgia, and most of
Florida and northern/Central Gulf of Mexico. Agricultural burning and
some residual smoke from the large wildfires out west have contributed
to the overall smoke.

Oregon/Washington...
Various wildfires were observed emitting light to moderately dense smoke
plumes throughout western Oregon and Washington state.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
