DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1640Z September 28, 2022

SMOKE:
Northwestern U.S/Western & Northern Canada...
An expansive area of light density smoke was observed over the northern
regions of the northwestern U.S, then extending north through most
of western and northern Canada along with southern regions of the
Northwest Territories. Cloud cover engulfing much of western Canada and
the Pacific Northwest, preventing further smoke analysis on moderate
to thick plumes observed in previous days. Despite the cloud cover,
pockets of moderate plumes were observed along with a patch of dense
smoke moving east/northeast across northern Alberta and southern region
of the Northwest Territories.

South-Central U.S/Gulf of Mexico...
Light smoke was observed extending from eastern New Mexico through the
southern/central Plains, then eastward through the southern Mississippi
Valley . The smoke was also observed covering most of the Gulf of Mexico
along with some small areas of eastern Mexico. This large area of smoke
was due to a combination of western U.S and Canadian wildfires along
with smoke from numerous agricultural burns throughout the southern U.S.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
