DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0136Z October 4, 2022

SMOKE:
Northern CONUS/Pacific Northwest/southern and eastern Canada...
A sizable area of mostly light to moderate density smoke covers an area
from Central Northwest Territory, the Pacific Northwest, far northern
U.S., to central Ontario. This smoke is mainly from wildfires across the
Pacific Northwest and Central Canada. this mass of smoke is generally
moving east. Moderate to dense smoke was observed from the ongoing
wildfires in the southern Northwest territories moving southeast and then
east into central Ontario. other areas with moderate to dense smoke were
western Oregon, Northern Washington, north and south British Colombia.

Lower Mississippi Valley...
Numerous seasonal fires were observed along the lower Mississippi
River valley from the Missouri Bootheel to Louisiana, with fires in the
agricultural areas on either side of the river. Smoke from these fires
was observed moving generally southwest, and consisted of moderate to
dense smoke primarily over eastern Arkansas, northern Louisiana, with
lighter smoke extending through Louisiana and into eastern New Mexico,
Western Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
