DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z October 7, 2022

SMOKE:
Western and Central Canada, Pacific Northwest...
A large area of residual light to moderate density smoke was seen this
morning/early afternoon from the ongoing wildfires burning over the
Pacific Northwest and western Canada. Smoke was extending from southern
portions of the Yukon and Northwest Territories, northern/central British
Columbia east into Alberta and into northwest Saskatchewan. Pockets of
heavier smoke were seen in central British Columbia and extended into
west central Alberta. Another dense area of smoke was seen in northeast
Alberta, northwest Saskatchewan and southern parts of the territories. In
the Pacific Northwest smoke is seen across western/central Washington and
Oregon. Areas of denser smoke from these fires in the Pacific Northwest
are seen near source at this time.

Southeast/Mississippi Valley/Mid-Atlantic/Northeast…
An area of mostly light density smoke from fires burning throughout
much of the region over the last few days was seen extending from the
Southern Plains east through the Mississippi Valley along the Gulf Coast
into parts of the Southeast, north into the Mid Atlantic and northeast
US. A large number of these seasonal fires were observed burning today
across Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and across Florida
north into southern Virginia.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
