DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0025Z October 10, 2022

SMOKE:
Northwestern U.S./Southwestern-Central Canada…
Numerous wildfires continue to burn across the Northwestern U.S. and
Western Canada with moderate-to-heavy density smoke observed in western
Oregon, northwestern Washington, southern Northwest Territories and
northeastern Alberta. Light remnant smoke from those same wildfires was
seen spreading across the majority of Oregon, Washington and Idaho,
northern Montana, northern Alberta, southern Northwest Territories,
and most of Saskatchewan. The smoke is dispersing predominantly toward
the east into central Canada and the U.S. Midwest.

South Central and Southeastern U.S…
Widespread agricultural burning continues to be observed across much
of the Mississippi Valley, with additional prescribed burning activity
found across the southeastern U.S. While most fires are seen to produce
relatively small and short duration smoke plumes, their combined effect
results in moderate smoke concentration affecting most of eastern
Arkansas in addition to southeastern Missouri. Light density smoke was
seen across a larger area including most of the southern states from
Texas to the Carolinas, and extending several hundred miles further to
the south over the central-northern Gulf of Mexico and to the east over
the Atlantic ocean off the Southeastern U.S. coastline.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
