DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z October 12, 2022

SMOKE:
Northwestern and North Central United States, Western and Central
Canada…
A large area of light to moderate density smoke, from the numerous
fires ongoing over the northwestern United States and western Canada,
was extending across much of the Northwestern and North Central United
States much of Central Canada and portions of western Canada.  Within this
area, a large area of moderate to high density smoke was extending from
the southern Northwest Territories south through much of Saskatchewan,
Manitoba and into the Northern Plains of the United States.  Other areas
of moderate to high density smoke were also seen closer to the ongoing
fires over Oregon, Washington and southern British Columbia and also
further north with the fires over the southern Northwest Territories.

Southern United States….
An area of light density smoke, from the ongoing fires over the
Southeastern United States and Southern Plains, was extending along
the southern United States from eastern Texas east to offshore the
Southeastern United States coast.

DUST:
Tropical and Subtropical Atlantic, Eastern Caribbean Sea and Eastern
Caribbean Islands….
A large area of Saharan dust was extending across much of the Tropical
and Subtropical Atlantic Ocean through the eastern Caribbean Islands
and into the eastern Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
