DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z December 2, 2022
SMOKE: Southeastern U.S… A few scattered and rather localized thin density smoke plumes were observed this morning with seasonal type fire activity across portions of the southeastern U.S. The usual daily seasonal/agricultural fires around Lake Okeechobee in southern Florida resulted in a somewhat larger patch of thin density smoke which moved off to the west during the morning. SMOKE/AEROSOL: Bay of Campeche/Western Mexico/Baja/Pacific off the Western Coast of Mexico… An area of thin density aerosol was detected moving to the northwest over portions of western Mexico, the southern half of the Baja peninsula and Gulf of California, and the Pacific Ocean just off the western coast of Mexico. This aerosol was believed to be composed of pollution from urban/industrial sources in south-central Mexico, in addition to small contributions from seasonal fire activity in southern Mexico. Farther to the north, a patch of thin density smoke from oil rigs in the Bay of Campeche was seen moving to the west. DUST: Southeastern Mexico/Pacific South of Southeastern Mexico… A thin density aerosol which is believed to be mainly dust from sources in southeastern Mexico was visible this morning moving to the south and offshore over a portion of the nearby Pacific Ocean. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
